I May Be Losing It...

Alissa Yarbrough

It's the start of a new year.

And a new post is long, long, overdue since I've managed to miss the last several months. But don't worry! I haven't dropped off the face of the earth.

Health issues, as many of us are familiar with, have risen to a problematic level, so when I've felt well enough to write, I continue working on the first draft of my latest novel.

It's a duh statement to emphasize I like to write, and I'd rather be writing than doing most anything. So it's easier to sit down and ply words where the story and characters in my head, my brainchild, visually come alive on the computer screen than turn to the uglier dimensions of an aspiring author's career – the aspects naïve little me was unacquainted with when I was blissfully hammering out Safecracker.

Pardon my little rant here (if you wish, you can skip to the next paragraph - I won't blame you), but isn't it enough you beat your brains out constructing a seamless storyline, creating realistic, relatable characters, squeezing these ideas into a flowing and intelligible word order, and lastly plucking out every last hair on your head with grammar and polishing, without also being required to be an expert in a handful of other fields unrelated to the art of literature? You gotta promote, you gotta master public relations. All to earn you that full-fledged and rather elusive following to prove to an agent or publisher that the book you poured your blood, sweat, and tears into is desirable and marketable. End rant.

So all that to say I have been trying to get back into the grind and wrap my head around the multitude of hoops I have to jump through in order to get published. Get my ducks in a row and all that. Yet despite my involuntary hiatus, I returned to find the ducks still running amok, and I might've just caught one underfoot. Poor little George...

Breathe... take one step at a time...BUT WATCH YOUR FOOT – THERE'S ANOTHER ONE ABOUT TO BE CRUSHED!

Okay, I may be losing it.

Anyway, that's my little update for now. And on a joyful note, I have written a suspense short story that is now available when you subscribe to my newsletter! Yay! To my previous subscribers: I haven't forgotten you, and I will try to get you the link for your copy of Defender soon! (So happy with how the cover turned out!)

In the end, I am still trucking along and learning to trust God in this season, both with my writing and health. All I can do is what the Lord has set for me, and that should be enough for me.

How has the new year found you? Bright-eyed, bushy-tailed, and raring to get back to things? Or a smidge on the disheartened side? Please reach out to me, I'd love to pray for you!

God bless!
